World Oldest Civilization, Archaeological site - Mohenjo-daro
The archaeological site Mohenjo-daro, often known as the "Mound of the Dead Men," is located in the Pakistani province of Sindh. Built approximately 2500 BCE, it was one of the earliest significant cities in the world and the greatest metropolis of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, existing at the same time as Norte Chico, Minoan Crete, ancient Egypt, and Mesopotamia.
The Indus Valley Civilization began to deteriorate in the 19th century BCE, and Mohenjo-daro was abandoned. It wasn't until the 1920s that the site was found. The city's site has undergone significant excavation since it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, making it the first location in South Asia to receive this honour. Erosion and poor restoration present a threat to the location.
